Developed in the 1920s along the banks of Buffalo Bayou, River Oaks grew into the standard against which Houston luxury is measured. Its winding, oak-lined streets hold some of the city's grandest homes, from Georgian and Mediterranean estates of the 1930s to the glass-walled modern builds going up today. House sizes are substantial, lots are deep, and nearly every block has a story.
The neighborhood is anchored by River Oaks Country Club and bordered by River Oaks Boulevard, Kirby, Westheimer and Shepherd, with the Uptown and Galleria district just west across the Loop and Downtown about ten minutes east.
