The History
How Sugar Land came to be.
The story behind this city, in plain language, as the Sharcom Realty Group team tells it to buyers who are just starting their search. Dates and figures are approximate and drawn from public histories; verify specifics before you rely on them.
Sugar Land traces its roots to Stephen F. Austin's colonial land grants. In the 1840s, sugar production began along Oyster Creek, and by the late 1800s the Imperial Sugar Company had built the refinery that made the town a company town for generations.
After Imperial Sugar began selling company housing to workers, residents voted to incorporate the City of Sugar Land in 1959. The city has since grown into one of Fort Bend County's showcase suburbs, with a polished Town Square, strong schools and some of the region's most sought-after master-planned communities.
